Two Types of Homestay

You will have the opportunity to choose from two types of homestay:

LTL Homestays

  • STANDARD HOMESTAY – Our most popular program. Our standard homestays include everything mentioned such as breakfast and dinner, are located nearby LTL Beihai, and will help you enjoy a 24/7 Mandarin experience.
  • TEACH ENGLISH HOMESTAY – This program in effect is the same as the above except for two caveats:
    • The price is 50% cheaper
    • In return for a cheaper price you will teach English to a family member of the host family, totalling 6 hours per week

Don’t worry though, if you are NOT a native English speaker, THAT IS OK. We do not expect perfect English speakers, TEFL certificates or the like.

This is a friendly chance to teach a Chinese person some English. You can split the 6 hours however you wish, agree a schedule with your host family.

The family member could be a child, a teenager or an adult, this will depend on the family.

There is no need to prepare materials either, the host family will have everything ready, it is NOT A FORMAL lesson. This could involve basic conversation, games, media or whatever the host family please.

Otherwise, everything else about the two homestays is the same.

FAQ's

Can I bring people back to the homestay to stay the night?

Afraid not.

The privacy of your host family must always be respected and bringing a stranger back, does not qualify unfortunately.

Can I come back late at night?

You can indeed but again, be respectful.

Do not come in loudly slamming doors, clanking kitchen utensils etc. Stay quiet, be gentle, and there should be no problems.

Will I be able to go on day-trips with my host family?

Absolutely, this is all part of the experience.

They will no doubt show you the hotspots of Beihai, whether it be for a morning, afternoon or a whole day trip!

Do I need to be fluent in English to teach?

Native speaker no, good grasp of English yes.

We will speak to you regarding your English level beforehand and advise on what we think is best. If you have a fair knowledge of English then you should be fine.

How am I actually teaching English?

However your homestay wants, so there is no need to prepare any lessons or materials.

You might be going through a pack of flashcards, you might watch some TV in English, you might play a game in English, you might read an article in English. It completely depends on what the family want to do, but of course, you can advise and prepare your own things, if you so wish. This is not required though.

Am I thrown straight into teaching immediately?

There is some leeway here due to the obvious jet-lag and culture shock.

Speak to your family and they will be understanding of your situation as of course, they are used to have foreigners make long journeys to stay with them!

How do I find LTL on my first day?

Your homestay family will bring you to school.

After that, you’ll be commuting by yourself, but of course, we are all here to help if you get lost!

Is Breakfast and Dinner included in the homestay?

Yes it’s all included and there’ll be a lot of it!

Chinese generally prepare a LOT of food and this isn’t a rare occurrence either. Expect to be fed until you burst every day!

Will my Chinese ability falter from speaking too much English?

It won’t falter as such, but the experience isn’t as authentic as a standard homestay.

Remember that in a standard homestay none of the family speaks English, so that means you always have to find a way to express what you want to say. When you sign up to a Teach English in China homestay you accept that at least one of the family members can speak English, or holds a strong interest in learning the language.
