What is the JLPT?
The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is an internationally recognised exam created by the Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchanges and Services.
It evaluates the skills of non-native speakers, focusing on reading comprehension, listening ability, Kanji knowledge, vocabulary, and grammar.
People choose to sit the JLPT for different reasons.
Some learners aim for the higher levels (N2 or N1) because these are often required for professional opportunities in Japan.
Others target the beginner or intermediate levels (N5, N4, N3) as a way of tracking their progress and staying motivated.
For students who want to enrol in a Japanese university, passing the N1 is often a necessity.
While the JLPT is highly valuable for career development, academic entry, or personal milestones, it isn’t always the right choice for every learner.
Here are some essentials to know before registering:
- The JLPT is entirely multiple choice.
- It assesses reading and listening, while grammar, vocabulary, and kanji differ by level.
- Not every test level is available in every city or on every date. Some centres may only provide N5–N3, while others may offer N4–N1.
- You can only take one level per sitting, so selecting the right level is important. Doing practice exams beforehand helps a lot.
- Depending on where you live, the exam may only be available once per year. For example, test sites in North America usually offer it only in December, while in Germany you’ll find sessions in both July and December.
