I spoke to 17 experienced teachers across LTL’s schools in Beijing, Shanghai, and Chengdu, including Lilia in Beijing and Marine in Taipei, many of whom have children of their own and had very clear views on which names they’d choose today.

In total I picked up 49 amazing Chinese boy names that are perfect for 2026, along with their meaning.

How Chinese Boy Names Work

Before we get to the list, here’s something worth knowing, especially if you’re not from a Chinese-speaking background.

Chinese names follow the order: family name (姓, xìng) first, given name (名, míng) second. So 王浩然 (Wáng Hào Rán) has the family name 王 (Wáng) and the given name 浩然 (Hào Rán).

Given names are usually one or two characters. Each character carries its own meaning, and the combination creates a new, layered meaning, which is why choosing carefully matters so much.

Many families also follow a generation name (字辈, zìbèi) tradition: one character in every child’s name across a generation is fixed, showing family lineage. If you’ve ever met siblings where every name shares one character, that’s why.

How Chinese Parents Choose a Name

When I asked our teachers what really goes into choosing a Chinese boy’s name, a few themes came up every time.

The zodiac year matters. A boy born in the Year of the Dragon (2024) might receive characters associated with strength, ambition, or flight. 天翊 (tiān yì) and 弘毅 (hóng yì) both feel right for a Dragon-year child. A boy born in the Year of the Snake (2025) might receive names tied to wisdom and calm, like 睿哲 (ruì zhé).

Characters carry weight. Parents consult the stroke count and the five elements (五行, wǔ xíng) associated with each character. A name that balances water, wood, fire, earth, and metal elements is considered auspicious. This is where feng shui thinking enters the naming process.

Sound and rhythm count. A two-character given name should flow well when said aloud with the family name. Repeated tones across all three syllables are generally avoided.

TIP💡 Not all families follow every tradition, but most will at minimum check the meaning of each character and how the full name sounds spoken out loud.

Some of the teachers I spoke with regularly mentioned names with positive attributes that reflect their hopes for their children.
