What is the HSK?

The HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi – 汉语水平考试) is the official Chinese proficiency exam, its name translating directly as the “Chinese Level Test.”

The exam is managed by Hanban (汉办), part of China’s Ministry of Education and also the organisation behind the well-known Confucius Institutes (孔子学院).

You can sit the HSK in accredited test centres all over the world, including universities, Confucius Institutes, and private language schools.

Learners choose to take the HSK for different reasons: to measure their current proficiency, set themselves a clear study goal, boost their career opportunities, or simply to challenge themselves.

At LTL, we provide tailored courses and support to help students prepare for the HSK, and can also guide them through the registration process.

The New HSK Exam: HSK 3.0

Officially referred to as HSK 3.0, the new HSK exam structure will be divided into three stages and nine levels with:

  • Beginner at Level 1-3
  • Intermediate at Level 4-6
  • Advanced at Level 7-9

According to the Chinese Testing International Centre in Barcelona, the advanced levels (7-9) are for foreign students who want to specialize in Chinese language and literature, and other majors such as Sinology.

The cost and date of the HSK exams will depend on the country you are taking the test in and which level you are taking.

Check with local test centres for exact information.

The HSK exam is split into sections. Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking (HSK3-6).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the HSK?

The HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi – 汉语水平考试) is the official Chinese proficiency exam, its name translating directly as the “Chinese Level Test.”

What is HSK 3.0?

HSK 3.0 (also called the “New HSK”) is a major update to China’s official Chinese proficiency exam introduced between 2021 and 2026.

The new system expands the test from 6 to 9 levels, grouped into three stages: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced.

It increases vocabulary requirements, places greater emphasis on real-life communication skills, introduces translation tasks, and requires handwriting for higher levels.

Will the HSK textbooks change in 2026?

The textbooks will change, but we are still waiting for more news.

HSK made the following statement a few years back, and we’re still waiting for more:

“The textbooks and courses compiled and developed according to HSK 1-6 levels can still be used. In the next 3-5 years, HSK 1-6 levels will be gradually adjusted according to the “Standards” and the actual conditions of Chinese learners in various countries.”

How many HSK levels?

There are now 9 HSK levels, although the first 6 are the most commonly taken.

What are the main differences between the old and the new HSK?

The two main differences are as follows:

The old/current HSK has 6 levels and the new HSK has 9.

The old/current HSK tests up to 5,000 words, whereas the new HSK requires you to know over 11,000

Will my current HSK Exam results remain valid?

Yes and we have a direct quote from HSK to also back this up, which states:

“The currently implemented HSK 1-6 levels will not be adjusted in the near future, and the test effectiveness, test content, reference vocabulary and test format will remain unchanged and will continue to be implemented stably. The scores of candidates participating in HSK 1-6 levels are still valid, and the validity of the certificates already obtained remains unchanged. “

Therefore there is no need to worry if you need these to apply for a Chinese university or job for example.

Do I have to take the HSK exam?

You are under no obligations to take any exam when you learn Chinese.

An oral test or a speaking test is just a way of gaining a grade. If you need this on your CV for a potential job then yes, the HSK Exam is worth taking.

If you have a personal goal and want to reach a certain level of Chinese proficiency, then yes why not take the test.

Otherwise the choice is completely up to you.

Can LTL help me prepare for this HSK exam?
